Dear Interested Party:

Colorado National Monument proposes to construct a new trail in that would connect the existing Wildwood trail to the Corkscrew trail, located in the eastern portion of the monument. The proposed trail would be located on both monument and BLM lands.

The proposed trail would be approximately 1.5 miles long and would provide a moderately level route that would allow opportunities for a loop with other existing trails in the immediate area. The trail would be designed to minimize soil and vegetation impacts and provide variety to the visitor through varied terrain and vegetation type, opportunities for views, and opportunities for a shorter route that is close but somewhat removed from the urban interface. Safety considerations would also be an important element of designing the proposed trail. Please see the attached map for an approximate location of the proposed trail.

An Environmental Assessment for constructing a well designed and sustainable trail connection will be prepared in compliance with the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) to provide the decision-making framework that 1) explores a reasonable range of alternatives to meet project objectives, 2) evaluates potential issues and impacts to park resources and values, and 3) identifies mitigation measures to lessen the degree or extent of these impacts.

The National Park Service encourages public participation throughout the NEPA process during which the public has two opportunities to formally comment on the project; once during this initial project scoping period and again following release of the Environmental Assessment. We are currently in the scoping phase of this project, and I invite you to voice your ideas, comments, or concerns in this effort.
