Each spring, employees at Katahdin Woods and Waters National Monument need to grade roads and parking areas, replace failed culverts, and service toilets to welcome the 40,000+ expected visitors. Planning for this work starts every fall and includes documentation to disclose to the public, Tribes, and partners, the environmental impacts of these actions. In compliance with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act NPS with the State Historic Preservation Officer and Tribes has developed a programmatic agreement that streamlines this process while ensuring the protection of Monument resources.
The final document was filed with the Advisory Council on Historic Preservation on December 12, 2024 and is available at the public document link.
