The Mississippi Hills National Heritage Area (MHNHA) was designated by Congress in March 2009 when legislation sponsored by Senators Thad Cochran and Roger Wicker was signed into law as part of the Omnibus Public Land Management Act of 2009.
MHNHA covers 19 full counties and portions of 11 others in the northeastern part of the Magnolia state, including: Alcorn, Attala, Benton, Calhoun, Carroll, Chickasaw, Choctaw, Clay, DeSoto, Grenada, Holmes, Itawamba, Lafayette, Lee, Lowndes, Marshall, Monroe, Montgomery, Noxubee, Oktibbeha, Panola, Pontotoc, Prentiss, Tate, Tippah, Tishomingo, Union, Webster, Winston and Yalobusha.
MHNHA represents a distinctive cultural landscape shaped largely by the dynamic intersection of Appalachian and Delta cultures. Lasting contributions to our country's musical and literary legacies were forged by Hills natives Elvis Presley, William Faulkner, Tennessee Williams, Howlin' Wolf and Tammy Wynette.
MHNHA seeks to interpret and share the stories of these individuals, as well as the legacies of Civil Rights pioneers James Meredith and Ida B. Wells-Barnett. MHNHA also focuses on lesser-known figures of historical and cultural interest, as well as events of significance to our nation's history that took place within its borders.
MHNHA is filled with vibrant communities that share a common geography and history, and the heritage area seeks to educate residents and visitors alike about the region's rich and diverse heritage, as well as its people, places, and defining moments. MHNHA is a window on this compelling portion of America's past, and highlights the historic, cultural, natural, scenic, and recreational treasures of the Mississippi Hills.
As set forth in the enabling legislation, the local coordinating entity for MHNHA is the Mississippi Hills Heritage Area Alliance, whose mission is to preserve, enhance, interpret and promote the cultural and heritage assets of the hills region. Its key objectives are to increase jobs and visitation to the area and to develop and support projects and programs that sustain the heritage tourism industry within the region.
The Alliance is in the final stages of developing its federally-mandated Management Plan, which was created through a two-year planning process that included public meetings, stakeholder interviews and in-depth research. As the planning process draws to a close, you are invited to review and comment on the draft plan.
