Dear Reader,

On behalf of the Manhattan Project Special Resources Study team, I would like to thank you for your continued interest in this project.

The National Park Service, through the Department of the Interior, and in collaboration with the Department of Energy, was directed by Congress to study several Manhattan Project Sites for possible inclusion as a unit in the national park system.

The Manhattan Project Sites special resource study has been completed. The Department of the Interior has submitted a letter to Congress recommending the establishment of a Manhattan Project National Historical Park in Oak Ridge, Tennessee; Los Alamos, New Mexico; and Hanford, Washington. The Secretary recommends that the park be managed as a partnership between the National Park Service and the Department of Energy.

It is now up to Congress and the President whether to decide to designate a new park or not. If a national historical park is designated, the National Park Service would work with the Department of Energy, and consult with the public and other stakeholders to produce a management plan for the park. The plan would provide more detail about public use of the sites, the role of the community-based programs, and other management issues.

On this site you will find project newsletters, the Draft Special Resource Study/Environmental Assessment, and the Finding of No Significant Impact (FONSI). The FONSI contains the final recommendation of the special resource study.

Again, thank you for your interest in this study.
