Implement Environmentally Friendly Canada Goose Control

National Mall and Memorial Parks » Implement Environmentally Friendly Canada Goose Control » Document List

The goose harassment services provided are intended to help the NPS carry out the mission to conserve the scenery and the natural and historic objects and the wildlife therein and to provide for the enjoyment of the same in such manner and by such means as will leave them unimpaired for the enjoyment of future generations, as stated in the Organic Act.

The National Mall and Memorial Parks has a very large Canada Goose population throughout. Objective of harassment is meant to discourage geese from grazing near and occupying the Lincoln Reflecting Pool. The presence of geese is leading to the degradation of the pool water due to defecation in and on walkway near the pool. Expanding the area of control to eventually include JFK Hockey Fields and the Washington Monument will support the main objective of controlling within the reflecting pool area.

Goose control will be accomplished using harassment techniques to control geese with open class or better sheep trial dogs (Border Collies). This hazing of resident Canada geese, both local and migratory, will reduce the occurrence of these birds in the targeted high visitor use areas.
