The National Park Service (NPS) has completed a Fire Management Plan for Gulf Islands National Seashore as mandated by the NPS Wildland Fire Management Guidelines. Fire Management Plans are developed to ensure that firefighter and public safety are not compromised while meeting the resource management objectives for the site. Manual and mechanical thinning and prescribed fire have been proposed to promote ecosystem sustainability, reduce hazard fuels accumulations, maintain existing defensible space around seashore structures, and create and/or maintain hazard fuels breaks along sections of the seashore perimeter. The NPS proposes to suppress all wildland fires at the site in the most environmentally-sound manner.
