Archeological Testing of 2 Sites along Green River

Canyonlands National Park » Archeological Testing of 2 Sites along Green River » Document List

Results from the recently completed three year River Corridor Architecture and Rock Art Documentation Project identified a number of archeological sites in close proximity to established camping areas that have experienced, and continue to experience, moderate to severe visitor related impacts. One site has been severely compromised by visitor-related impacts such as stone removal, trampling, and artifact collection. Another site is adjacent to a NPS maintained campsite and in proximity of the White Rim road. Although the site has likely been partially obliterated by the existing campsite, the site still yields a robust artifact assemblage including basketry, projectile points, diagnostic ceramics and lithic tools. Due to it's visibility from and proximity to the campsite, this site is at high risk of data loss from unauthorized artifact collection and looting.
