Dear Friends,
On behalf of the planning team, I am pleased to announce that the Record of Decision for the General Management Plan and Environmental Impact Statement for Abraham Lincoln Birthplace National Historic Site has been approved. As a reminder, the general management plan will provide overall guidance for the long-term management of the national historic site. The plan will determine how the site will address resource preservation, visitor uses, development needs, and interpretation issues for the next 15 to 20 years.
The comments and suggestions that some of you provided earlier were considered when developing the final plan. When implemented, the final plan will enhance opportunities for visitors to interact with and appreciate all of the site's resources while preserving and/or adaptively using cultural resources. The plan also recommends that the name of the site be changed to "Abraham Lincoln Birthplace National Historical Park" to reflect the addition of Abraham's early boyhood home property at Knob Creek.
I welcome your continued support of Abraham Lincoln's Birthplace National Historic Site as we look forward to the commemoration of the bicentennial of Abraham Lincoln's birth in 2008/2009 and beyond.
