Ahwahnee Hotel Replace Crawl Space Utilities

Yosemite National Park » Ahwahnee Hotel Replace Crawl Space Utilities » Document List

The purpose of this project is to replace the existing utilities within the crawl space at The Ahwahnee Hotel, a National Historic Landmark structure located in Yosemite Valley within Yosemite National Park. They are deteriorated and beyond their useful life. Replacing the water, sewer, and steam lines will provide consistent service, reduce disruptions and repair shutdowns, eliminate odors, and maintain the integrity of the operating systems of the structure.

Within the crawl space – which is under the main floor concrete slab of the hotel – water, sewer, storm drain, gas, and electrical utilities are located above ground and are attached to the underside of the floor. Excavation under and outside the Hotel will not be required - all line replacement will occur above ground.

The project will occur in two phases. Phase 1 is for the schematic design of replacement of utilities in the crawl space for The Ahwahnee Hotel with investigative research to determine extent of replacement, and types of replacement materials. Phase 2 represents design engineering and construction documents suitable for competitive bidding to general contractors. Consideration in the design will be given to those product upgrades meeting long-term value with consideration to NPS Guiding Principles of Sustainable Design.

The compliance review is actually for Phase 1 and 2, which, as stated above is for schematic design and design of construction documents. There will be no destructive testing or disturbance of historic fabric or ground during these 2 phases.

Phase 3 is the construction phase and project compliance will be again reviewed at that time based on the construction plans, developed through the project management process and reviewed by NPS, in Phase 1 and 2.

NPS Archeology has confirmed that the project to upgrade the crawl space utilities at the Ahwahnee Hotel will not create a conflict with archeological resources.
