2010 Redwood National Park Fire Management Plan

Redwood National Park » 2010 Redwood National Park Fire Management Plan » Document List

The 2010 Redwood National Park Fire Management Plan describes how fire and fuels will be managed in the national park from 2010 through 2015. A Finding of No Significant Impact (FONSI) for the environmental assessment (EA) on the plan was approved on April 30, 2010.

The 2010 FMP is similar to the plan that has guided fire management actions in the national park since 2005. Under the 2010 plan, the total acres of prescribed fire will be increased from about 4400 to about 6800 acres, with new prescribed fire units in the Crescent and Enderts Beach areas south of Crescent City to restore grasslands and reduce alien invasive plant species; shaded fuel breaks near Orick and Hiouchi will be enlarged; and a new break will be created around the Howland Hills Outdoor School in Del Norte County.

Fuel reduction projects and other vegetation management programs such as management of second growth forests and Bald Hills prairies generate large volumes of woody debris from cutting trees less than 12 inches in diameter. The NPS will issue firewood permits to allow removal of woody debris generated by fuel reduction and vegetation management projects to reduce fire hazard more quickly than if the wood is allowed to decompose naturally.
