Increase of Recreation Fees

Lake Mead National Recreation Area (LMNRA) is authorized to collect recreation fees under the Federal Land Recreation Enhancement Act (FLREA) of 2004. Public meetings were held in June 1990 to discuss the proposed entrance stations and fees at LMNRA. In 1993, parks like LMNRA were identified in revisions of the Land and Water Conservations Fund Act and 1993 Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act as high priority for implementation of entrance fee programs. In July 1999, LMNRA was designated a Fee Demonstration Park under the Recreational Fee Demonstration Program enacted by Congress in 1996, which was the predecessor to FLREA. LMNRA has been collecting entrance fees since 2000.
The recreation fee program has funded millions of dollars in initiatives and projects at LMNRA including the extension of launch ramps, park wide litter reduction, construction of visitor information/entrance stations, and a study of the Colorado River watershed.
LMNRA is designated a Tier II park in the National Park Service's national fee schedule. Currently, LMNRA charges fees that are well below its designated fee schedule. For years funding from the Southern Nevada Public Land Management Act (SNPLMA), which has allowed the proceeds from public land sales to fund projects and initiatives, has delayed the need to raise fees. In light of decreased SNPLMA funding and the current budgetary outlook, the park can no longer absorb inflationary costs while still being able to fund needed visitor services, conservation initiatives, deferred maintenance, and capital improvement projects.
Changes to the fee schedule include increases to the normal length of stay from five days to seven days. Fees for vehicle passes and individual passes will be raised in two stages, with the first on January 1, 2011 and the second on January 1, 2014. Discounts for additional vehicles and vessels will be eliminated. At this time, proposed increases would not affect the commercial tour fee category or the America the Beautiful National Parks and Federal Recreational Lands Passes.
