The Backcountry Board Parking area south and east of the Twentynine Palms Entrance to Joshua Tree National Park will be expanded and delineated from the current footprint of 2000 square feet to approximately 5500 square feet. This will enhance visitor safety & minimize damage to vegetation and wildlife habitat, and improve visitor safety. This parking area is a main starting point for the California Riding & Hiking Trail (CRH), yet is not adequate for horse trailers. The unpaved parking area will be expanded and surfaced with class 2 base material. The perimeter will be delineated with boulders to prevent off-road driving. Some areas of vegetation will be removed using loaders, graders, and skip loaders. The subsurface will be compacted and will be capped by at least 2" of base materials by using a small roller. Larger boulders will be placed around the perimeter to prevent off-road vehicles use. Hitching posts will be placed along the perimeter using 3" steel posts secured into holes with a 2 foot deep base.
