Caltrans Storm Damage Repairs, State Route 1, Marin County

Golden Gate National Recreation Area » Caltrans Storm Damage Repairs, State Route 1, Marin County » Document List

The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) proposes four storm damage projects along Highway 1 in Marin County south of Stinson Beach. All four are proposed to remedy landslide problems caused by winter storms and would include the following features; a retaining wall, drainage improvements, 12-foot wide lanes and 4-foot wide shoulders.

The specific project locations are as follows:

1) Post Mile 6.6, near Muir Beach, 0.3 mile north of Seascape Drive. This section of Highway 1 is adjacent to GGNRA.
2) Post Mile 7.7, near Muir Beach, 0.2 mile north of Coast View Trail. This section of Highway 1 goes through GGNRA.
3) Post Mile 8.1, near Muir Beach, in the vicinity of Slide Ranch's entrance. This section of Highway 1 is adjacent to GGNRA.
4) Post Mile 10.95, 0.2 mile north of Dipsea trail. This section of Highway 1 goes through Mt. Tamalpais State Park.

Caltrans staff will be available to discuss these projects as well as the development of Caltrans Storm Damage Repair Guidelines to help implement storm damage repair projects along Highway 1 in Marin and Sonoma County.

September 2012 Open House Update
National Park Service, State Parks, and the Coastal Commission staffs have met with Caltrans over the past year, and continued to discuss concerns about cumulative effects associated with the proposed road construction. The concerns include Caltrans proposed expansion of their right of way to construct retaining walls on national and state park land, altering the aesthetics of Highway 1, and road safety.

The pending repairs would potentially widen the paved road by up to 50%, nd straighten some of the curves. The new design would add new 4-foot shoulders which may improve conditions for cyclists in the repaired segments, but could also result in increased vehicle speeds. Caltrans is also working on Highway 1 design guidelines for future road repair work on Highway 1 in Marin and Sonoma Counties.
