This is the remediation phase of a lead-in-soils remediation project at Fort Vancouver National Historic Site specific to US Army double Infantry Barracks structures in East Barracks. Soil testing around Buildings 989, 991 and 993 showed unsafe levels of lead from 20th century exterior paint products, which flaked and became mixed with the upper 6 in. of soil around the perimeter of the buildings. These recognized environmental conditions (RECs) are as defined in 40 Code of Federal Regulations, Part 312, Standards and Practices for All Appropriate Inquiries (Environmental Protection Agency's All Appropriate Inquiries Rule).This 6 in. depth of contaminated soil will be removed using safe practices and replaced with clean soil.
