Bonnie Clare Road Reconstruction

Death Valley National Park » Bonnie Clare Road Reconstruction » Document List

Bonnie Clare Road serves as an important access point for the northeastern portion of Death Valley National Park. This road provides access to the Grapevine and Last Chance mountain ranges in the Park, including sites such as historic Scotty's Castle, Ubehebe Crater, Mesquite Spring Campground, and several backcountry areas.

Bonnie Clare Road is also an important ethnographic and historic resource. It was a significant prehistoric travel corridor for the Timbisha Shoshone Tribe who live within Park boundaries, and portions of the road are adjacent to the Death Valley Scotty Historic District (listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1978). An ethnographic report for Bonnie Clare Road was completed in 2006.

The National Park Service at Death Valley National Park is accepting comments until March 19, 2012 on an Environmental Assessment (EA) analyzing a proposal to reconstruct Bonnie Clare Road, from milepost 0.0 to milepost 7.7. Also included in this proposal is the reconstruction of Grapevine Ranger Station parking lot and sidewalks, and the resurfacing of Mesquite Spring Campground Road from milepost 0.0 to milepost 1.9.

An analysis of two alternatives and their potential impacts to the environment and Death Valley National Park resources are presented in the EA—a no action alternative and the Park's preferred alternative.

The Park's preferred alternative includes removal of the existing, deteriorating asphalt on Bonnie Clare Road, and the placement of a new aggregate base course and new hot asphalt concrete pavement along Bonnie Clare Road from milepost 0.0 to milepost 7.7, from the Death Valley National Park boundary at the California/Nevada state line to the junction of Ubehebe Crater Road and approximately 100 feet past the Grapevine Ranger Station.

The purpose of this proposed road reconstruction and resurfacing is to address extensive deterioration of the road surfaces and areas of the road surface containing ruts and pavement cracks, and to improve visitor safety. The proposed road alignment would use the existing alignment of the straight road segments, but would be modified at many of the curves to provide the needed lane width and radius for buses and large recreational vehicles to remain in one lane while traveling through the curves. The roadway vertical profile would remain unchanged for the majority of the project length in order to maintain the historic character of Bonnie Clare Road.

The preferred alternative would also include resurfacing the existing asphalt parking lot east of the Grapevine Ranger Station, replacing the existing sidewalks, ramps, curbs and gutters around the perimeter of the parking lot. The new parking lot and sidewalks would be re-graded to meet Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 and Architectural Barriers Act of 1968.
