Shenandoah National Park, Chronic Wasting Disease Management Plan/Environmental Assessment

Shenandoah National Park » Shenandoah National Park, Chronic Wasting Disease Management Plan/Environmental Assessment » Document List

The National Park Service drafted a Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) Response Plan/ Environmental Assessment (EA) by amending an existing CWD Detection and Assessment Plan EA approved in 2013. CWD is a fatal, non-native disease to Shenandoah's white-tailed deer that has been documented approximately 12 miles from the park's boundary.

A disease response plan is needed because of the proximity of this non-native disease to the park and the potential impacts to park natural resources if the disease remains unmanaged. Several management alternatives were considered but most were dismissed. This single alternative plan/EA simply amends the previous plan to allow lethal removal of deer in key developed areas of the park in order to reduce high densities to match those of surrounding areas - effectively reducing the amplification and spread of CWD in the park's deer population.
