General Management Plan

Roosevelt-Vanderbilt National Historic Sites » General Management Plan » Document List

Dear Friend of Roosevelt-Vanderbilt National Historic Sites:

I am pleased to announce the availability of the Abbreviated Final General Management Plan/Environmental Impact Statement for Roosevelt-Vanderbilt National Historic Sites. The plan will guide long-term decisions about the preservation and use of the Home of Franklin D. Roosevelt National Historic Site, Eleanor Roosevelt National Historic Site (Val-Kill), and the Vanderbilt Mansion National Historic Site. This document includes an analysis of comments received on the Draft General Management Plan/Environmental Impact Statement (GMP/EIS) with NPS responses, errata sheets detailing editorial corrections to the draft plan, and copies of agency and substantive public comments. The Draft GMP/EIS, issued this past winter, outlined three alternatives for management. It also assessed the potential environmental impacts of the alternatives.

Over the course of several years, the public has participated in the planning process through public meetings, formal and informal consultation, newsletters, and through materials posted on the Internet. This commentary was thoughtful, helpful, and clearly heartfelt. I would like thank the many people—partners, advisors, members of the public—who provided input throughout this process.

The public release of this Abbreviated Final GMP/EIS will be followed by a 30-day no-action period, which will conclude September 7, 2010. After the no-action period, a Record of Decision (ROD) will be prepared to document the selected alternative. The Abbreviated Final GMP/EIS and the Draft GMP/EIS constitute the documentation upon which the ROD will be based. The ROD will also be made available to the public. Its availability will be announced in local media, on this web site, and in the Federal Register.

A limited number of printed copies of the Abbreviated Final GMP/EIS will be available upon request after July 27, 2010. After that time, printed copies will also be placed at the parks visitor centers and at the Hyde Park Free Public Library. If you would like to receive a printed copy of the document, please write to me at the address below.

Development of this General Management Plan has benefited from wide-ranging support. It is our hope that, with your continued involvement, the plan will provide a demonstration of the Roosevelts' unwavering commitment to active participation in government and civic life. Thank you for helping us to uphold and advance the enduring legacy of these special places.

Sincerely,

Sarah Olson
