Niagara National Heritage Area Study

New national heritage areas are designated by Congress after there has been a professional study to evaluate the resources to be preserved and interpreted as well as to assess the level of community support and commitment to such a proposed endeavor. This type of study is called a "national heritage area study."
At the initiative of Senator Charles Schumer (D-NY), Congress in 2002 passed a law directing the National Park Service to "conduct a study of the suitability and feasibility of establishing the Niagara Falls National Heritage Area in the State of New York."
The study will consider management alternatives for recognizing, preserving and interpreting the places that define the Niagara Falls region. The management alternatives would describe the basic characteristics of each alternative. There are many issues and possibilities to explore. Even if an area meets all of the criteria for a national heritage area, there may be alternatives to a formal federal designation. Studies of potential new heritage areas evaluate a range of management alternatives.
