Replace Accessibility Ramp at Ellwood

Fredericksburg and Spotsylvania National Military Park » Replace Accessibility Ramp at Ellwood » Document List

The Fredericksburg & Spotsylvania National Military Park proposes to replace the accessibility ramp at Ellwood on the Wilderness Battlefield The current ramp on the north facing side of the house was installed in 1998. The existing ramp was designed and built in-house. The ramp does not meet current code standards and needs to be replaced to bring it into code compliant.

Park maintenance staff will remove the existing ramp and install a new ramp on the same side of the house. The proposed layout of the new ramp will have three landings with three sections of ramps pitched at 1:12 per foot ratio. The new ramp will be constructed using pressure treated 4x4 support post, 2x10 framing and composite decking boards for the walking surface and railing cap. The railing design will match the existing design of Chatham Manor ADA ramp. All of the 4x4 support post will be placed on concrete footer blocks, the blocks will eliminate the need to dig new footers below the frost line and pouring conventional footings. The new footer blocks will be placed at ground finish grade on a 6-inch base of gravel.

The late Georgian style Ellwood house (IDLCS #007951) was constructed in 1799 and is known to serve as the Lacey family summer house. The NPS took ownership of the property in the 1970s.
