Chesapeake and Ohio Canal National Historical Park » Clear Vegetation from Historic Lockhouse 52 Foundation » Document List

The National Park Service, Chesapeake and Ohio Canal NHP, will clear vegetation from the ruins of Lockhouse 52, Mile 122.89 of the park. Vegetation has encroached into the footprint of the masonry foundation of the structure. In accordance with the Secretary of Interior's Standards for the Treatment of Historic Properties, the vegetation will be removed within the foundation footprint and from the masonry walls. Additionally, vegetation will be removed to a distance not to exceed 15 feet from the exterior of the foundation. This is in accordance with the park's standard operating procedure #M/PW/002 "Culvert Inspections and Vegetation Removal from Historic Structures."

Approximately 13 smaller caliper trees (4-5 inch DBH) are located within the foundation. Additionally, smaller woody vegetation is also present, many growing within the masonry joints.

The project will be undertaken by park volunteers and staff. Volunteers will use hand tools and be supplies with necessary personal protective equipment. Park staff will supervise the volunteers and supply support assistance for any vegetation that needs power tool cutting.

Upon removal of the vegetation, visitors will be able to have a better view of the ruins and park staff will provide interpretive information regarding the occupation of Lockhouse 52 and the operation of Lock 52.

The park's Interdisciplinary Team reviewed the project for impacts to natural and cultural resources. The project does not pose any serious or long-term effects to the environmental, historical, cultural, archeological, or visual resources. It meets categorical exclusion #C.4 – Routine maintenance and repairs to cultural resources sites, structures, utilities, and grounds if the action falls under an approved Historic Structures Preservation Guide or Cyclic Maintenance Guide, or if the action would not adversely affect the cultural resource.
