Sycamore Island Bridge - Repair and Repaint Project - Mile 6.46

Chesapeake and Ohio Canal National Historical Park » Sycamore Island Bridge - Repair and Repaint Project - Mile 6.46 » Document List

The National Park Service, Chesapeake and Ohio Canal NHP, will undertake repairs to the historic Sycamore Island Bridge, which is a circa 1900 steel thru-truss trail bridge. According to the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) inspection, the bridge is in fair structural condition due to widespread moderate rusting of the structural steel and railings, with several small areas of significant section loss.

All of the steel needs to be cleaned and painted to arrest rusting and prevent further section loss and a subsequent loss of load capacity. Other items required are replacement the existing deck planks with slightly longer planks to protect the lower chord from runoff and subsequent corrosion. This can be done concurrently with the repainting and repair of the bridge.

Repairs to deteriorated steel components will be undertaken. Deformed and deteriorated components will be removed and replaced in kind with A36 steel. Appropriate dome head bolts will be used for connections.

Concurrent with the bridge repairs, the timber retaining wall along the approach trail is severely decayed. In-kind repairs to the trail and retaining walls will also be undertaken.

The park's Interdisciplinary Team reviewed the project for impacts to natural and cultural resources. The project does not pose any serious or long-term effects to the environmental, historical, cultural, archeological, or visual resources. It meets categorical exclusion #C.4 – Routine maintenance and repairs to cultural resources sites, structures, utilities, and grounds if the action falls under an approved Historic Structures Preservation Guide or Cyclic Maintenance Guide, or if the action would not adversely affect the cultural resource.

The project also meets the National Historic Preservation Act/Section 106 Programmatic Agreement, Streamlined Review Criteria #1 – Preservation Maintenance and Repair of Historic Properties.
