Chesapeake and Ohio Canal National Historical Park » Cleaning and Painting of Maryland State Highway Bridges - Routes 17, 340, Interstate 81 » Document List

The National Park Service, Chesapeake and Ohio Canal National Historical Park, will issue special use permits from the Maryland State Highway Administration (SHA) pertaining to bridge maintenance work that would cross over lands administered by the NPS.

The three bridges are Route 17 at Brunswick, Route 340 near Sandy Hook, and Interstate 81 near Williamsport. The three bridges are to be mechanically cleaned and repainted. Additional structural work may be necessary upon inspection during the cleaning/painting process.

All work will be overhead and will be contained to prevent environmental contamination and protection to park people and resources. Air monitoring stations, soil sampling prior to work and post project, and other minor access needs for park visitor safety will be permitted. These permitted actions will be outlined in special use permits, one for each project.

The park will remain open for visitors.

The contract information for each bridge is as follows;

Route 340 – Maryland Department of Transportation, State Highway Administration, Baltimore, Maryland Contract No. WA4075168

Route 17 - Maryland Department of Transportation, State Highway Administration, Baltimore, Maryland Contract No. FR6195168

The project does not pose any serious or long-term effects to the environmental, historical, cultural, archeological, or visual resources. It meets categorical exclusion #C.3 – Routine maintenance and repairs to non-historic structures, facilities, utilities, grounds, and trails.

Upon review under the National Historic Preservation Act/Section 106 Programmatic Agreement, no historic properties will be affected.
