The National Park Service, Chesapeake and Ohio Canal National Historical Park, will host a volunteer event on September 27, 2008 as part of National Public Lands Day. The project will focus on specific trail rehabilitation within the Carderock Recreational Area of the park. The park event will be advertized as Adopt-A-Crag. The project will involve;
•Minor trail relocation will occur in one area to address unsafe conditions.
•Minor trail rehabilitation will occur in four other areas to address heavily eroded sections.
•Mulch will be applied to trails in accordance to previous compliance. Mulch will be free of any invasive plants/insects.
•Unsafe conditions along the lower edge of the climbing area will be addressed, to include loose trail retaining beams and exposed rebar.
The volunteers will be lead by park staff at all times during the project. Job Hazard Analysis (JSA) will be reviewed with project workers prior to the project. Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) will be issued prior to the project.
The park's Interdisciplinary Team reviewed the project for impacts to natural and cultural resources. The project does not pose any serious or long-term effects to the environmental, historical, cultural, archeological, or visual resources. It meets categorical exclusion #C.12 – Minor trail relocation or development of compatible trail networks on logging roads or other established routes.
Upon review under the National Historic Preservation Act/Section 106 Programmatic Agreement, no historic properties will be affected.
