The National Park Service, Chesapeake and Ohio Canal National Historical Park, will re-establish a campfire program area at McCoy's Ferry. This work will be undertaken as an Eagle Scout service project.
Six wooden benches would be installed in a semi-circle on a level grassy area between the campground area of McCoy's Ferry and the boat ramp parking lot. It will be on the river side of the entrance drive into the campground.
The benches will be made of oak, measuring 8 feet in length. Each bench will have two wooden legs, that will extend into the earth sixteen inches. Each leg will be anchored with cement to prevent vandalism and displacement during Potomac River flood events.
A brown and white sign, meeting NPS Sign Standards, will be installed near road that states "Campfire Program Meeting Area."
In addition to the benches, a metal fire ring, identical to those in the campsites, would be installed 20 feet from benches.
The benches will be constructed and installed by Eagle Scouts. The park's Four Locks Maintenance District staff will install fire ring and produce and install sign.
The campfire program area will be used for environmental education programs through Bridging the Watershed as well interpretive programs on the construction and operation of the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal National Historical Park.
The park's Interdisciplinary Team reviewed the project for impacts to natural and cultural resources. The project does not pose any serious or long-term effects to the environmental, historical, cultural, archeological, or visual resources. It meets categorical exclusion #C.8 – Replacement in kind of minor structures and facilities with little or no change in location, capacity, or appearance – for example, comfort stations, pit toilets, fences, kiosks, signs, and campfire circles.
