SHA Bridge Painting SUP - Route 522

Chesapeake and Ohio Canal National Historical Park » SHA Bridge Painting SUP - Route 522 » Document List

The Maryland State Highway Administration will be undertaking the cleaning and repainting of the Route 522 Bridge at Hancock MD. In order to protect park resources during this project, the National Park Service, Chesapeake and Ohio Canal National Historical Park will issue a special use permit to outline project requirements for work undertaken within park boundaries.

The project contract information is contained within "Maryland Department of Transportation, State Highway Administration, Contract No. WA3045180."

The project will be over lands administered by the C&O Canal NHP. The work zone will be above the park's towpath and Berm Road. In order to ensure park visitor safety, project contractors will be required to install safety netting above the towpath and roadway. Additional safety measures will be in place for all overhead work, such as flaggers on the towpath and roadway. The park will remain open at all times. Visitor can expect temporary delays, not to exceed five minutes, whenever workers are directly over the towpath and roadway.

The park's Interdisciplinary Team reviewed the project for impacts to natural and cultural resources. The project does not pose any serious or long-term effects to the environmental, historical, cultural, archeological, or visual resources. It meets categorical exclusion #C.3 – Routine maintenance and repairs to non-historic structures, facilities, utilities, grounds, and trails.
