The National Park Service will issue a Special Use Permit, #07-477, to the the Sierra Club for a recreational day hike. Two hundred hikers are expected to participate. The event will use the park towpath and seven support stations will be required.

The event will take place on Saturday, April 28, 2007, from 2:00 AM until 11:00 PM. The hike will extend from Georgetown to Harpers Ferry along the canal towpath. With staggared start times, 100 people will begin the 100K hike from Georgetowwn to Harpers Ferry. The second group of 100 will complete a 50K hike that starts at Whites Ferry and ends at Harpers Ferry.

The support stations will be located at Old Anglers Inn - Mile 12.3, Reilly's Lock - Mile 22.8, Edwards Ferry - 30.4, and Whites Ferry - 35.5, Monocacy Aquaduct - 42.2, Point of Rocks - 48.2, and Brunswick - 55.0. All support stations will be locted at public access points.

The towpath will remain open for all park users.

The park's Interdisciplinary Team reviewed the project for impacts to natural and cultural resources. The project does not pose any serious or long-term effects to the environmental, historical, cultural, archeological, or visual resources. It meets categorical exclusion #D.3 – Issuance of permits for demonstrations, gatherings, ceremonies, concerts, arts and crafts shows, and so forth, entailing only short-term or readily remediable environmental disturbances.
