Install "Mule Power" wayside exhibit

Chesapeake and Ohio Canal National Historical Park » Install "Mule Power" wayside exhibit » Document List

The C&O Canal NHP will be installing a wayside exhibit entitled "Mule Power." This exhibit will be located adjacent to the mule shed at Lock 4. The wayside will explain how mules were an integral part of the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal during its operation. A canal boat captain typically had four mules. Two of the mules would work, pulling the canal boat, while the other two rested in a stall on board the canal boat. In the 1870's, there were about 3,000 mules working on the canal.
