Pea Ridge National Military Park is a 4,300-acre Civil War Battlefield that preserves the site of the March 1862 battle that saved Missouri for the Union. On March 7 and 8, nearly 26,000 soldiers fought to determine whether Missouri would remain under Union control, and whether or
not Federal armies could continue their offensive south through the Mississippi River Valley. The Elkhorn Tavern, site of bitter fighting on both days, is a National Park Service reconstruction on the site of the original. The park is one of the most well preserved battlefields in the United States. The park also includes a two and one-half mile segment of the Trail of Tears.
Park staff is observing increased use of park trails and roads by visitors who desire to experience the battlefield landscape on foot, bicycle or horseback. The park is interested in developing improved pathways and multi-modal connections within the park, and in determining feasible options for connecting the park with the regional trail network identified in the Northwest Arkansas Regional Bicycle and Pedestrian Master Plan http://www.nwabikepedplan.com/, and other proposed trail routes to connect with adjacent communities. Within the park, there are
existing pedestrian and equestrian trails in addition to historic road corridors. Some of these may need to be relocated, rehabilitated or realigned to meet the park's objectives and for consistency
with the park cultural landscape report.
