MNRR Fire Management Plan

Missouri National Recreational River » MNRR Fire Management Plan » Document List

The National Park Service (NPS) proposes to implement a fire management plan at Missouri National Recreational River. The plan provides direction for fire management along the Missouri River from Ft. Randall Dam to Running Water, SD, and from Gavins Point Dam to Ponca, NE. Also, included in the plan are the lower 20 miles of Niobrara River and the lower eight miles of Verdigre Creek in Knox County, NE.
The major components of the fire management plan are: 1) implementation of Director's Order #18 Wildland Fire Management, USDI, NPS, 2005, which requires each National Park with vegetation capable of burning to prepare a fire management plan, 2) wildland fire suppression with no use of wildland fire, and 3) use of prescribed fire to reduce fire hazard and to attain vegetation management objectives.
The fire management plan broadly covers land outside of direct control of the NPS. However, the plan will apply only to NPS fee-owned lands within the Missouri National Recreational River. It will not apply to private property, property where the NPS has purchased less-than-fee interest (i.e., easement), or other public lands within or adjacent to the boundary, unless the private landowner or public land manager wishes to conduct cooperative prescribed fires.
The NPS requests your comments on the proposed fire management plan. Copies of the plan are available at the Corps of Discovery Welcome Center located approximately two miles south of Yankton, SD on the west side of US HWY 81. The plan may also be downloaded from the Park's website at www.nps.gov/mnrr. In addition, a copy of the plan may be obtained by contacting Stephen Wilson, Resource Management Specialist, at 402- 667-5524.
