Sheep Camp Campground Relocation - Environmental Assessment
Klondike Gold Rush National Historical Park Superintendent James Corless announced today the availability of an Environmental Assessment (EA) for the proposed relocation of Sheep Camp Campground on the Chilkoot Trail. The EA analyzes the environmental impacts associated with the proposed relocation of the campground, trail, and footbridge. It also addresses the park’s need to improve the safety of visitors hiking the Chilkoot Trail, alleviate sanitation concerns, eliminate further degradation of floodplain values, and enhance backcountry operations. Located within the active floodplain of the Taiya River, this backcountry campground is threatened by frequent flooding and erosion. Two alternatives are discussed:
1) The No Action alternative, which would maintain the status quo. The campground, trail and bridge would continue to be managed in their current flood-prone locations, frequent flooding and ongoing erosion would continue to impact visitor safety and access in this popular backcountry campground; and,
2) The Proposed Action alternative, in which the NPS proposes to relocate the campground, trail and bridge to sites outside of the active floodplain.
The EA was completed in accordance with the National Environmental Policy Act of 1969, and the regulations of the Council on Environmental Quality (40CFR 1508.9), and considers potential impacts to the human environment including natural soundscape, vegetation, soils, wildlife, recreation/visitor use, park operations and management, National Historic Landmark, cultural resources, water resources, geohazards, and floodplains for each alternative.
This notice is an opportunity for the public to identify any issues or concerns they may have regarding this project during the 30-day public comment period. A copy of the EA is available through the internet at the website address below. Those who cannot access the website may request a hard copy by mail. Respondents are encouraged to submit their comments any one of the following ways:
