Chilkoot National Historic Trail Comprehensive Management Plan (CMP) and Environmental Assessment (EA)

Klondike Gold Rush National Historical Park » Chilkoot National Historic Trail Comprehensive Management Plan (CMP) and Environmental Assessment (EA) » Document List

Background

Congress designated the Chilkoot National Historic Trail under the National Trails System Act on December 29, 2022. The 33-mile trail was used historically as a trading route by the Tlingit, Carcross/Tagish First Nation, and Taku River Tlingit First Nation and later as a gold rush route. 16.5 miles of the trail are located within the boundary of Klondike Gold Rush National Historical Park near Skagway, Alaska and has been managed by the park since it was created in 1976. The trail continues into Canada as the Chilkoot Trail National Historic Site of Canada for another 16.5 miles.

Why is the plan needed?

Per the National Trails System Act, the National Park Service (NPS) is required to complete a CMP for national historic trails. The CMP is needed to provide long-term coordinated direction for the NPS and its partners for management, development, and use of the Chilkoot National Historic Trail.

What is the purpose of the plan?

This effort aims to provide a framework for managing and developing the trail over the next 20 years. The decision-making framework in the trail's CMP will provide guidance to make management choices in a manner that is consistent with the purposes for which the Chilkoot National Historic Trail was established. This includes the protection of trail-related resources and providing the desired trail experience for visitors.
