Herman Leirer (Exit Glacier) Road Flood Mitigation Project

Kenai Fjords National Park » Herman Leirer (Exit Glacier) Road Flood Mitigation Project » Document List

In cooperation with the Federal Highway Administration, the National Park Service is working on a long-term solution to the seasonal flooding problems on the road to Exit Glacier in Kenai Fjords National Park. The proposal is to raise the road 5 feet in the 1-mile problem area, which is just beyond the Resurrection River Bridge (milepost 7 to 8) on the Herman Leirer Road to Exit Glacier, just inside the national park. Also, 4 large box-culverts (6 feet wide each) will be installed to allow more flow under the road for wetland habitat and floodplain function. The jersey barriers on the road will be removed. Construction will be 2016. Public comments were accepted 7/17/15 - 8/17/15.

Exit Creek forms a broad alluvial fan with frequently changing flow patterns. The section of road in question crosses the natural alluvial fan and is prone to periodic overflow. Recently, flooding has damaged the road, overwhelmed the few pipe culverts that exist under the road, and necessitated the closure of public access during periods of high flow (6" or more on the road). The project will be a long-term solution that simultaneously improves the wetlands and stabilizes the roadway.
