Brooks Camp Wastewater Solids Treatment Pond

Katmai National Park and Preserve has prepared an Environmental Assessment (EA) to analyze the environmental impacts associated with construction of a replacement wastewater solids treatment pond (WSTP) necessary for the disposal of biosolids generated in the Brooks Camp area of the park. The new WSTP would be sited at mile marker 1.8 along the Valley of Ten Thousand Smokes Road in a previously undisturbed location. This proposed WSTP near Brooks Camp would provide Katmai with a replacement facility for the now decommissioned wastewater cesspool which was in operation near Brooks Camp since 1993 and was recently decommissioned. The proposed construction of the Brooks Camp WSTP includes the following components:

• Construction of a replacement WSTP consisting of a facultative lagoon system connected to a percolation cell which would remain in operation near Brooks Camp for the next 30 years;

• Construction of a new 8-foot tall chain-link security fence, buried horizontal fencing, and an electrified perimeter fence will enclose the WSTP intended to provide site security and to exclude large land mammals; and,

• Construction of a new 350-foot-long access road connecting the new WSTP to the Valley of Ten Thousand Smokes Road.

Katmai welcomes feedback on this EA from our friends, neighbors, stakeholders, and other interested parties. The public comment period for this EA will open on January 6, 2021 and close on February 5, 2021.
