Cultural Landscape Report

Effigy Mounds National Monument » Cultural Landscape Report » Document List

Since 2013, the National Park Service, in consultation with our state and tribal historic preservation partners, has been developing a Cultural Landscape Report for Effigy Mounds National Monument. After nearly three years of effort, we finally have the official Public Review version of the Draft Cultural Landscape Report and Environmental Assessment (CLR/EA) ready for review.

This document serves multiple purposes. First, it documents what is known of the landscape: its origins, its evolution over time, its cultural features, and its current condition. Second, it proposes treatment recommendations for managing the landscape in order to ensure the long-term preservation of its resources and values. In short, this is a very important document for Effigy Mounds National Monument.

The Draft Cultural Landscape Report/Environmental Assessment will be available for public review and comment from February 25, 2016 through March 25, 2016. Park staff will be hosting a pair of open houses in order to discuss the Draft CLR/EA, answer questions, and receive input. The first meeting will be held on March 7, from 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm at the Marquette City Hall, located at 102 North Street in Marquette, Iowa. The second meeting will be held on March 9, from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm at the Effigy Mounds National Monument Visitor Center, located 3 miles north of Marquette on Highway 76.

NOTE: The document is large - nearly 450 pages. It includes a large amount of background information in Chapters 1 through 3, which are critical components of a Cultural Landscape Report. Chapters 4 and 5 contain the proposed treatment recommendations and implementation plan, and combined these two chapters are less than 65 pages in length. Chapters 4 and 5 document "how" we propose to treat the landscape. Chapters 1 through 3 help address "why" we propose what we do.
