An historic Linden (Basswood) tree, planted by Frederick Dean in the mid 1850s across the street from the Lincoln Home, is infested with Carpenter Ants. This was discovered by a tree-trimming contractor in April 2020. The contractor felt the tree could be saved with immediate treatment and would not need to be removed. A professional arborist will be contacted to apply the treatment and any follow-up needed. The tree is one of the few Lincoln-era trees remaining within the park and is prominent in the viewshed from the Lincoln Home front door. The tree is near a pedestrian boardwalk and an historic wooden house, meaning the ants need to be removed quickly to avoid further damage to historic assets.
