Rehabilitate Failing Electrical System for Settlement
Kalaupapa National Historical Park » Rehabilitate Failing Electrical System for Settlement » Document List
The electrical distribution system, maintained and operated by the NPS, is outdated, inadequate, and has exceeded its lifespan. NPS staff, and the public. Access from the 'topside' of Molokai, to the peninsula requires walking a steep, three mile trail with a vertical 3,000 ft. drop. The Maui Electrical Company (MECO) power overhead line follows the trail and terminates at a 300kVA MECO owned substation on the peninsula; here the existing overhead system is tied in and managed by the NPS.
This electrical system project will repair and upgrade the Settlement's overhead electrical distribution system and will include connecting the existing water pump house and back-up generator locations into the electrical system. Improvements will meet current industry standards and codes for MECO requirements, National Electric Code (NEC), National Electrical Safety Code (NESC), Rural Utilities Service (RUS), National Electrical Testing Association (NETA), and National Electric Manufacturers Association (NEMA), remove documented safety hazards, improve reliability, and reduce deferred maintenance.
