Appomattox Court House National Historical Park Trail System Comprehensive Plan
Appomattox Court House National Historical Park » Appomattox Court House National Historical Park Trail System Comprehensive Plan » Document List
The park's Five Year Strategic Action Plan identifies a goal of providing visitors greater access to resources in outlying areas of the park. This goal connects to the vision of the Town of Appomattox to provide a regional trail system. The Town of Appomattox encourages the use of bicycles and visitors have expressed the desire for hiking and biking trails. The over-arching goal of the project is to create a conscientious plan that provides for safe pedestrian and bicycle-oriented travel within the Park that allows visitors opportunities to experience and reflect upon the Parks' landscapes and their resources without reliance on automobiles. Specifically, the park-wide comprehensive trail plan would:
Address safety concerns of existing trails;
Increase visitor satisfaction with park programs and activities;
Increase visitor understanding of primary interpretive themes and understanding of primary natural resources;
Contribute to the public's need for trail opportunities in the area; and,
Increase alternative transportation opportunities through multi-modal trail development both within the park and with the local community.
