Appomattox Court House National Historical Park Trail System Comprehensive Plan

Appomattox Court House National Historical Park » Appomattox Court House National Historical Park Trail System Comprehensive Plan » Document List

Appomattox Court House NHP is preparing a park-wide comprehensive trail plan. The existing five miles of trails in the park are located on former logging roads and farm lanes that date back to pre-NPS ownership. The trails are frequently washed out and pose safety risks to visitors using the trails. Trail planning would include lands acquired from the 1970s to the present. These areas contain significant interpretive resources and trail access will allow them to be linked to the overall story and important interpretive themes within the park, while protecting important natural and cultural resources.

The park's Five Year Strategic Action Plan identifies a goal of providing visitors greater access to resources in outlying areas of the park. This goal connects to the vision of the Town of Appomattox to provide a regional trail system. The Town of Appomattox encourages the use of bicycles and visitors have expressed the desire for hiking and biking trails. The over-arching goal of the project is to create a conscientious plan that provides for safe pedestrian and bicycle-oriented travel within the Park that allows visitors opportunities to experience and reflect upon the Parks' landscapes and their resources without reliance on automobiles. Specifically, the park-wide comprehensive trail plan would:

Address safety concerns of existing trails;
Increase visitor satisfaction with park programs and activities;
Increase visitor understanding of primary interpretive themes and understanding of primary natural resources;
Contribute to the public's need for trail opportunities in the area; and,
Increase alternative transportation opportunities through multi-modal trail development both within the park and with the local community.
