Halstead Meadow, located near Generals Highway between the Lodgepole area and the Dorst campground, is one of the largest montane meadows in Sequoia National Park. The meadow is partially within the Sequoia-Kings Canyon Wilderness. Past restoration work has been highly successful, and included the construction of a bridge on the Generals Highway (replacing the existing culverts) to improve the area's hydrology, and using heavy equipment to fill large gullies, followed by replanting the area with native vegetation.
Sequoia National Park is interested in any public concerns or opportunities related to this proposed restoration. After analyzing comments received during the scoping period the park will determine the level of analysis needed.
You will find supplemental information about the proposed project and an opportunity to comment through this website under Document List.
All written comments concerning this project must be transmitted, postmarked, faxed or hand-delivered by July 14, 2017.

Additional Information
Located at 7,000 feet elevation, the 21-acre Halstead Meadow is one of the largest montane meadows in the national parks. Sequoia National Park began to restore the meadow in 2007 and only six acres remain to fully complete this effort. The work has included construction of a bridge over the meadow to improve the area's hydrology and create a more sustainable road crossing. The remainder of Halstead Meadow contains a deep and unnatural gully which was created from past erosion. An existing erosion control structure near the picnic area and the meadow outlet (approximately 1,000 feet in length) has lowered the water table in adjacent areas that were former wetlands. This has resulted in the destabilization of the meadow, the lowering of the water table in the area, and the subsequent loss of wetlands vegetation.
