This document serves multiple purposes. First, it documents what is known of the landscape: its origins, its evolution over time, its cultural features, and its current condition. Second, it proposes treatment recommendations for managing the landscape in order to ensure the long-term preservation of its resources and values. In short, this is a very important document for Effigy Mounds National Monument.
The Draft Cultural Landscape Report/Environmental Assessment will be available for public review and comment from February 25, 2016 through March 25, 2016. Park staff will be hosting a pair of open houses in order to discuss the Draft CLR/EA, answer questions, and receive input. The first meeting will be held on March 7, from 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm at the Marquette City Hall, located at 102 North Street in Marquette, Iowa. The second meeting will be held on March 9, from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm at the Effigy Mounds National Monument Visitor Center, located 3 miles north of Marquette on Highway 76.
NOTE: The document is large - nearly 450 pages. It includes a large amount of background information in Chapters 1 through 3, which are critical components of a Cultural Landscape Report. Chapters 4 and 5 contain the proposed treatment recommendations and implementation plan, and combined these two chapters are less than 65 pages in length. Chapters 4 and 5 document "how" we propose to treat the landscape. Chapters 1 through 3 help address "why" we propose what we do.
