Environmental Assessment (EA)

Proposal by the National Park Service (NPS), Padre Island National Seashore (PAIS) to construct a new beach access boardwalk and restore the primary dune on the east side of the Malaquite Visitor Center in Kleberg County, Texas.

Summary: The proposed boardwalk is intended to provide visitors to PAIS with American with Disabilities Act (ADA) compliant access to the beach while restoring the primary dune line. Restoration of the primary dune line is expected to offer additional protection of Park infrastructure in the event of strong storm and tidal events.

Alternative A: Proposes to construct the majority of a new, elevated boardwalk within the footprint of the existing boardwalk. This proposed action will: 1) comply with ADA, 2) include one access point to the beach from the main deck, and 3) restore the primary dune line.

Alternative B: Proposes to construct a new, elevated boardwalk slightly south of the existing boardwalk footprint. This proposed action will: 1) comply with ADA, 2) include two access points to the beach from the main deck, and 3) restore the primary dune line.

Alternative C: Proposes no action, keeping the landscape in its current condition.
