Alternative Transportation Feasibility Study

Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument has completed an Alternative Transportation Feasibility Study (ATFS). A two-year public process led to development and analysis of seven management options. In mid-March, a final newsletter was provided to inform stakeholders of study results. The National Park Service will further evaluate funding availability, impacts to the park, and the ability of the options to address existing and future transportation needs. The NPS anticipates implementing selected elements of three options in 2013. This will address increasing transportation congestion and safety concerns and help protect natural and cultural resources. The study looked at several scenarios (demand, routes, vehicles, schedules), necessary infrastructure, operations & maintenance, funding, partnerships & marketing, general impact to natural and cultural resources and visitor experience and total cost of ownership.

Project goals included:
- Determine if/how alternative transportation can help address LIBI's transportation issues
- Determine if alternative transportation is financially feasible at LIBI

The NPS anticipates implementing the following elements of Options I, IV, and VI-B in 2013. Other elements, such as drainage improvements, paving, and widening for appropriate shoulders/uniform road width would only occur as future funding becomes available.

Elements to implement 2013 include improvements within the current footprint
• Reconfigure some existing parking areas (from Option I)
• Improve signage, pavement marking and wayfinding (from Option IV)
• Consider use of variable message signs on highways (from Option IV)
• Provide shuttle service from off-site staging area during peak visitation for June 25 events (from Option VI-B)
