The Rohwer Relocation Camp, although visited by numerous tourists every year, lacks the necessary interpretive and educational material to communicate the history of Japanese American internment. Through this project, Arkansas State University (ASU) will develop a comprehensive interpretive plan for Rohwer. The plan entails initial research to identify major themes and events to be interpreted. To determine these themes and events, ASU's Heritage Studies PH.D program, in collaboration with the Arkansas Heritage SITES Program, will hold public stakeholder input sessions and review scholarly research and archival material. This information will be used to integrate the history of Rohwer into regional themes, such as agriculture, Civil Rights, and music. ASU also will develop interpretive designs for the site, including informational panels or kiosks supplemented by directional signs, brochures, audio components, and visual elements. The selected interpretive elements will be fabricated and installed at the Rohwer Relocation Center by ASU. These interpretive designs will highlight the camp's history, former internees, as well as direct visitors to the Rohwer Relocation Center Cemetery, a National Historic Landmark.
