Sandy Creek Bridge Reconstruction

Pinnacles National Park » Sandy Creek Bridge Reconstruction » Document List

The NPS has completed an Environmental Assessment (EA) for the reconstruction of the Sandy Creek Bridge, located on the east side of Pinnacles National Monument between the Pinnacles Campground and the Ben Bacon Ranch Historic District.

Since the existing Sandy Creek bridge was heavily damaged in winter storms 2010, the proposed action would remove the existing bridge and construct a new bridge over Sandy Creek in a location 300 feet downstream to serve pedestrians, bicylists and administrative vehicles.

The proposed project includes: removing the existing one lane, non-historic, damaged bridge; recontouring the creek banks at the existing bridge location for stabilization and re-vegetation; obliterate the existing asphalt approach driveway; build a new one lane bridge 300 yards downstream of the existing bridge with new concrete footings and abutments, wood timber guardrails and rip rap bank stabilization; build an unpaved one lane road/trail for visitor pedestrian and bicycle use and park staff vehicle use from the new bridge to the day use area of the Pinnacles Campground.

The EA includes a complete evaluation of four action alternatives and the No Action alternative. The four action alternatives include reconstructing a bridge at the existing bridge location, reconstructing the bridge in 2 new locations downstream, and removing the existing bridge but not rebuilding it.
