Replace Visitor Center roof

Natural Bridges National Monument » Replace Visitor Center roof » Document List

The polyurethane spray foam roof covering on the VC has exceeded its design life of 25 years. It is critical that the roof be replaced before it begins to leak significantly. A leak free roof is proposed and will benefit the park by maintaining the structure in good condition and protecting the interior contents of the VC from water damage.
Proposed work: The VC roof has two distinct segments, the domed portion over the exhibits and the flat section over the office and bathrooms. The work on the domed portion of the roof may include removing all the spray foam and replacing the roof deck and then installing a modern roofing material of either a singly ply membrane or a new acrylic coating. However if the spray foam is deemed in satisfactory condition the spray foam may be left in place and a new acrylic coating would be installed over the existing spray foam. A contractor who specializes in spray foam application will be brought onsite to determine the condition of the existing spray foam.

The flat roof section is known to be in extremely poor condition. This project proposes to install a low pitch roof on top of the existing flat roof. The new low pitch roof would be at ¼" per foot, and would add a thickness of no more than 12" on top of the existing roof. To get a sense of how the new roof would visually impact the building, see the photo attachments.

Originally the roof was a dark brown color as documented in early photos. In 1980 the spray foam was installed and the roof is the color it is now, basically off white. This project proposes to change the color to something in between the dark brown and the white. Once a contractor has been selected and the type of system to be installed is known, the Contractor will be required to submit samples of all the standard colors available. Natural Bridges Superintendent will then make the final decision on roof color.
