The National Park Service, Chesapeake and Ohio Canal National Historical Park, will install a total of five wayside exhibits within the Potomac Gorge area of the park. The signs will present information on the Potomac Gorge's history and natural resources.
The waysides will follow approved National Park Service format and design. The signs will be located at the following locations; Capital Crescent Trail trailhead, Fletcher's Cove, Carderock (2) Anglers Inn. The signs at Carderock and Anglers Inn will include a boot brush at the base of each sign. The purpose of the boot brush is to remove seeds from shoes/boots. The seeds could be transported onto Bear Island, a sensitive plant habitat. The boot brushes and the wayside exhibit information will stress the need to protect the island from non-native plants for the preservation of the existing habitat.
The park's Interdisciplinary Team reviewed the project for impacts to natural and cultural resources. The project does not pose any serious or long-term effects to the environmental, historical, cultural, archeological, or visual resources. It meets categorical exclusion #C.5 – Installation of signs, displays, and kiosks.
