A number of Fire Island communities are cooperatively proposing beach nourishment projects on 3 sections of beach. The communities include Saltaire, Fair Harbor, Dunewood, and Lonelyville on western Fire Island; Fire Island Summer Club, Corneille Estates, Ocean Beach, Seaview, and ocean Bay Park on central Fire Island; and Fire Island Pines and Davis Park on eastern Fire Island. The beach areas are within the boundaries of Fire Island National Seashore and the proposed beach nourishment projects will require approval by the NPS and issuance of a Special Use Permit.

Technical information about the proposed beach nourishment projects was presented at a meeting held on February 14, 2008. The information presented at the technical meeting is available by clicking on the "Documents" link to the left.

A draft Environmental Assessment has been prepared to evaluate the potential impacts of the proposed projects and is currently under review by the National Park Service.

Two additional beach nourishment projects are proposed by the Suffolk County Dept of Public Works at Smith Point and Cupsogue County Parks which would also require issuance of a Special Use Permit by the National Park Service. These beach nourishment projects are being evaluated in a separate Environmental Assessment.
