Excavate access holes along boardwalk in SW quadrant along 8th Street
Lincoln Home National Historic Site » Excavate access holes along boardwalk in SW quadrant along 8th Street
Three access holes are needed to locate gas lines between houses prior to boring for new conduit needed to improve internet within the park. The holes will be located next to the concrete runners under the boardwalk along 8th Street between Jackson and Edwards in the Southwest quadrant of the Lincoln Home neighborhood. Each hole will be approximately 1' square and about 24" deep down to the existing gas line. The boring company has been unable to locate the gas lines and needs to verify their locations before boring to ensure avoidance. The holes are located between the Corneau (HS-02) and Sprigg (HS 11) houses, and on the north sides of the Dubois House (HS-15) and the Shutt House (HS 17). A post hole digger will be used to create the holes to eliminate all but the necessary ground disturbance. The gas lines were originally installed in the 1870s and have been replaced several times since. The concrete sidewalk runners were added in the late 1970s when the sidewalks were changed from solid concrete to boardwalk with concrete runners/stringers. The dirt will be returned to the access hole and the boardwalk planks returned to their location when the project is completed.
