Planting areas along the western fences and the boundary fence between the Beedle (HS-12) and the Lyon/Rosenwald (HS-08) have become choked with tall weeds, small trees, and an overgrown boxwood bush. The boxwood will be removed, and the area would be mowed down this fall. Mulch will be added to create a defined planting area and improve the aesthetic appearance. Approximately 10 feet only of the Beedle backyard is visible from 8th street and the main pedestrian area for visitors. The remaining area is blocked by buildings and fences from pedestrian and parking areas and only seen by staff. These areas were formerly parking areas since at least 1961. The Cultural Landscape Plan (2014) lists the boxwood in poor condition, and also states that "Bed needs to be weeded and mulched and plants should be added to fill out the bed" and suggests having plants in the area gives a more lived-in appearance, but also recommends that the beds be removed if regular upkeep is not possible as they are not historic. The park prefers the appearance of planting beds to grass only and will limit emerging plants to daylilies.
