A dying Northern Red Oak across from the north doors of the Visitor Center along 7th Street, and a dying Swamp White oak along Capitol Avenue between Grace Lutheran Church and 8th Street will be removed for safety and replaced with native street trees suggested by the City of Springfield arborist. The tree near the VC was marked Poor on the 2017 Arborist report and has continued to decay. The tree along Capitol was marked excellent in the same report but has suffered from drought and compacted roots due to its location too near a very busy street. Both trees are within 2 feet of busy pedestrian walkways and city streets and are potential safety hazards should they fall in any direction.

The City of Springfield Urban Forestry Commission recommends the following: Some nice small trees that would do well in Springfield are: Red Bud, Japanese Maple, and Autumn Brilliance Service Berry. Some recommendations for medium sized trees are: Magnolia, American Hornbeam, and Ironwood. (https://www.springfield.il.us/Departments/PublicWorks/urbanforestry.aspx)
